Your MacBook screen is black and you can’t see anything. This can be a real problem if you’re using it for work or need to get some work done on the go. It could even be a big problem if you’re just trying to watch a movie or play a game.

The good news is that there are several reasons why this might happen, and they all have pretty simple fixes. Here are some of the most common reasons your MacBook screen is black and tips to solve the problem:

The Battery is Dead

If you’re using a MacBook that isn’t plugged in, then you may have a dead battery. Your computer will eventually shut down when the battery is completely depleted and unable to hold a charge.

If you’ve recently charged your MacBook but it still won’t turn on, then there may be something wrong with the power adapter or cable. Try plugging your computer into a different outlet and see if that helps resurrect your MacBook.

If neither of these solutions works, then it could be time to replace your battery.

Dead Backlight Lamp

Another common cause of a black MacBook or MacBook Pro screen is a dead backlight lamp. You can fix this problem by replacing the lamp yourself or taking it to an authorized service center and getting it repaired.

Check for Damaged Cable

If you see a black screen when you start up your Mac, check the cable connecting the monitor to the computer.

If there is any damage or looseness in the connection, try reconnecting it and see if this resolves the problem. If not, replace the cable or take it to an Apple store to have it replaced by an authorized technician.

Hardware Damage

When you can’t see anything on your MacBook Screen, it might be due to damaged hardware. If your Macbook Pro or Air was dropped or hit, the display could be physically damaged.

Damaged Hard Drive

The hard drive is where all of your data and operating system files are stored; if it’s damaged, then your computer won’t boot up because it has no way to access those files.

If this is the case, you will need to replace the hard drive in order for everything else on your laptop to work again or reconnect it properly to the motherboard.

Faulty motherboard

If your Macbook has been dropped or banged against something hard enough to damage it severely, then this could be another reason for having no image onscreen. The motherboard may have been damaged and needs to be replaced.

Faulty RAM Chips

Random Access Memory (RAM) stores information so that the CPU can easily access it. If one of the RAM sticks fails, then it may cause your computer to not boot or just be slow overall.

Try removing one stick of RAM and booting up with only that one stick installed (make sure you unplug everything else from your machine before doing this). If that works, then you know that one of your RAM sticks is bad and needs to be replaced.

Software Failure

If there’s no physical damage to your device, yet the screen remains dark, then there could be a software problem. This can happen if you’ve installed incompatible software on your Macbook that causes the screen to go black when you start up your laptop.

To troubleshoot this issue, try booting into Safe Mode by holding down Shift + Ctrl + Option while turning on your computer and then restart it once again without holding any keys down in order to see if there are any problems with third-party software installed on your system or if there are any other issues with the hardware itself that caused this problem in the first place.

Accumulation of Dust

If your screen is black and you haven’t used your MacBook for a while (weeks or months), then it’s possible that dust or other debris has gotten into the internal components and is preventing them from working properly.

You can try cleaning out any dust yourself; if that doesn’t work, then you may need to take it to a professional for further diagnosis.

Damaged Computer Screen

The screen is one of the most important parts of your MacBook. It displays everything that you see on your computer, from the desktop and icons to any videos or images that you play. If the screen is damaged, then it is difficult for you to use your MacBook because you will not be able to see anything on it.

The screen can get damaged if you drop your computer or if it falls from a height onto a hard surface. The impact may fracture or crack the glass in front of the LCD panel, which results in dead pixels and other problems with displaying images on the screen. If this happens, then there is no way to fix it except by replacing the entire display assembly with a new one.
